There’s been a bookshop on this site since the early 1950s, making Macleay Bookshop one of Sydney’s oldest and most loved bookstores – loved for it’s depth of stock, knowledgeable staff and great location in Sydney’s old bohemian quarter … And loved for something else – that expectant feeling known to the true book browser, that here is quality. . . |
A customer recently likened Macleay Bookshop to the Paris literary haven, Shakespeare & Co (we wish!), and our shop also has figured in poetry, prose, fiction and memoir. We’re currently collecting pieces for this website – if you have a memoir of the Bookshop or know of a reference to it that you would like to add to our History page, email richard@macleaybookshop.com.au |
The high walls at Macleay Bookshop carry a collection of wonderful contemporary art.
Paintings in the shop include Victor Rubin’s fabulous Daphnis & Apollo (1981-83), and work by Richard Stern, current owner, bookseller and artist, of Macleay Bookshop.
We are very excited to announce that from November, 2008 Macleay Bookshop will also carry indigenous Australian artwork for sale, courtesy of Waterhole Art.
“Waterhole Art has been established for six years and specialises in contemporary Indigenous art sourced from Art Centre Communities. Each year the directors travel to communities to source work and to curate shows for the annual Indigenous Scholarship Fund shows.” |
